Does anyone make a pod for the old style Mantis, or a pod which could be used for that? Mine needs a nose shortening, and the pod that's on it is really ugly. Prefer if it was a tad more streamlined than the existing one.
Thanks

So you are looking to keep the boom with tail section, right? if you don't mind building a new fuse for that wing, then Terry is the guy - The only person I know who could make you an "old" Mantis pod would be Barns, since I think he has the molds - the other option would be to get in touch with guys who use to have the old fuselage - the guys down in LI or NJ could be a staring point

I don't want to mess with anything I don't have to. I think Terry's fuses are very nice, but I just thought if I was shortening the nose it would hardly be any more work to put a somewhat prettier pod on there. Also, I kind of think that the original pod is a bit too short for it's width, at the low Reynold's number involved. I might just file the carbon out of the one I have, do a bit of filling, and put it back on. But I'm tempted to build a WOOD pod. Since I'm not especially afraid of sandpaper, it might actually end up looking pretty good.

As it happens, it's really easy, after you saw off the pod, to heat up a steel rod with a torch and then hold it inside the sawed off boom piece until it gets so hot that the epoxy lets go and you can just pull it out. Of course this depends on what kind of epoxy you use. I suspect if it's JBWeld, you're out of luck.
Anyway, it's back in the air. |

As it happens, the shortened nose worked nicely. However, today I had another brain fade and lost the !$%$#% thing in the sun, and didn't find it again before the thud. So, I may be looking for a pod later, but for now I'm trying to find a Mantis fuse that's all set up (the wing seems fine) or a contest model, so I can practice and compete at LISF 2, and maybe the EOS. Probably not asking for something pristine, but definitely DO NOT need another project.
If there's anyone in the ESL who does brain transplants I may be interested. |
