About every 2 months I get a msg like the one just received that is pasted below. AFAIK, I'm not doing anything to cause them, is this anything to worry about? BTW, is there a more direct way to access the archive?
<Hi! This is the ezmlm program. I'm managing the esltalk@flyesl.org mailing list.
I'm working for my owner, who can be reached at esltalk-owner@flyesl.org.
Messages to you from the esltalk mailing list seem to have been bouncing. I've attached a copy of the first bounce message I received.
If this message bounces too, I will send you a probe. If the probe bounces, I will remove your address from the esltalk mailing list, without further notice.
I've kept a list of which messages from the esltalk mailing list have bounced from your address.
Copies of these messages may be in the archive.
To retrieve a set of messages 123-145 (a maximum of 100 per request), send an empty message to: <esltalk-get.123_145@flyesl.org>
To receive a subject and author list for the last 100 or so messages, send an empty message to: <esltalk-index@flyesl.org>
Here are the message numbers:
255
--- Enclosed is a copy of the bounce message I received.
Return-Path: <> Received: (qmail 9357 invoked for bounce); 4 Oct 2006 02:18:36 -0000 Date: 4 Oct 2006 02:18:36 -0000 From: MAILER-DAEMON@bouncehost To: esltalk-return-255-@flyesl.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="1159838252bouncehost2737168" Subject: failure notice
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at bouncehost. I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.
<raschow@aol.com>: 205.188.157.25 failed after I sent the message. Remote host said: 421-: (DYN:T1) http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/421dynt1.html 421 SERVICE NOT AVAILABLE I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long>

Unfortunately for mail lists, AOL has gotten very strict in their spam filtering. Some changes can be made on the mail list server to reduce this impact, but that particular error says that AOL has received too many messages or too many user complaints about messages from the mail server's IP address. The server administrator might be able to participate in their feedback loop to ease the problem. I would suggest using a free webmail account (like Yahoo, Google, Hotmail, etc.) to subscribe to the list.

Plenty of spam gets thru anyway! So, ESL service provider also has unsavory customers? FWIW, I got no reponse when I requested service on msg 255 that allegedly bounced - was it anything important? Good Lift!

Doesn't necessarily mean unsavory customers. Could simply mean that server sent what AOL considers to be "too many" messages to AOL addresses. This can happen with a lot of traffic on mail lists with a lot of AOL subscribers. I don't see any identification numbers in the messages I've received. How do you determine which one is message 255 (other than getting a copy from ezmlm)?
