FROM THE PRESIDENT - Ed Anderson

Can you hear it? Listen! That¡¦s the sound of launches being made, landings being perfected and the pilots of the Eastern Soaring League getting tuned up for another year of active competition. Do you have your planes ready to go? If not, the time to get ready is now. We are only a few days from our first ESL contest weekend.

This year we have 30 contests arranged for your enjoyment. There will be 18 in our thermal duration division and 12 in our hand launched division. So there will be plenty of opportunities for people to participate and to improve their scores as the season progresses.

Naturally we will have awards each weekend and there will be top pilot awards for the season, but this year we will have one new award. This was voted on at the end of last season. The name, as entered in the ESL 2009 EOS minutes, is the ESL Soar-Meister. This will be a cross division award.

The Soar-Meister will be awarded based on the 4 best scores from HL and the 4 best scores from TD. If we assume that the pilot received all 100s, then the maximum score would be 800 and the ESL Soar-Meister will be awarded based on that score or the one closest to it. Now, if we should end up in a tie, then we will add one more HL score and one more TD score to the total and, hopefully that will break the tie.

The intention of this award is to recognize participation in both divisions and to recognize the pilot that has achieved a level of excellence in both divisions. Some of us are good at one or the other style of flying, but how many are really good at both? This should be interesting!

I hope you are excited about the new season. I know I am.

ROOM AND RIDE
http://www.flyesl.org/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=17

If you found a great little Motel near one of our contests, please let the rest of the League know about it. There is a section on the ESL forums where you can post information. Naturally we can all find the national chains, but the single location local places are harder to find. Some offer excellent value. Most ESL members are just looking for a clean place and a low price.

If you would really like to reduce travel costs, offer to exchange a room. Offer to house a friend when the contest is near you, and you stay with them when the contest is in their area. The savings can be quite large and you can talk flying all night. ļ

If you have a problem posting to the forums, please let Jose know. He is our webmaster. Or you can send the information to me and I will post it for you.

THE ESL SEASON OPENER - HRSF/BRASS

From: Glaab, Louis J. (LARC-D205)

Subject: [talk] HRSF/BRASS contest just 10 days away!

Good afternoon all!

Just wanted to let you all know that the HRSF/BRASS unlimited competition is just 10 days away!

Friday, 5/21, will be either sloping on the Blue-Ridge Parkway or Thermal flying at the contest site. Sat/Sun 5/22 and 5/23 will be Unlimited MOM (interesting phrase just after Mother¡¦s Day). We have posted a few new awards on the BRASS site and will have US F3J T-shirts for overall champions in Expert and Sportsflyer.

Plus, in keeping with tradition, the best competitor will also receive an US F3J T-shirt. For those unfamiliar with this concept, the competitor who launches well, but does not destroy the winches/winch line, helps out when they can to keep the contest running, and is all-around supportive and contributive to the contest, is selected by the CD for this momentous award and recognition. Steve Lucke has been very hard to beat in this area.

I sincerely hope that you all will come on out and enjoy some late spring/early summer soaring in the scenic Blue Ridge area of VA and help kick-off the ESL¡¦s 2010 Unlimited Competition season.

Thanks, Josh.

ESL MOBILE PHONE LIST
Carried over from the November Newsletter

Peter Schlitzkus, soarkraut@mchsi.com , has offered to organize a cell phone directory and call chain
for those of us that have to travel to contests. There have been many times when people need to contact the CD or someone from the local club about weather, detours, flat tires or the like. A call to the right person, can really be helpful.

If you would like to participate in this effort, contact Peter with your cell phone number. Peter, my number is on the way! Thanks for offering to do this for the League.

ESL SHIRTS, SWEATSHIRTS AND MORE

Some of you may recall that David Beach set up an ESL logo site a couple of years ago. The host site is on Cafepress. They have t-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs and mouse pads. So if you would like to show off the League logo, you can order whatever you like. There is no minimum order. T-shirts start at $9 and sweatshirts start at $33. http://www.cafepress.com/FlyESL

Thanks to David Beach for setting this up for us.
