Discus launched gliders are sweeping the glider hobby. These planes are so easy to fly and require nothing in terms of support equipment. No winches, hi-starts or other launching equipment. You don't have to be big or strong to launch them because it is all technique. A weak launcher can get 50 feet easy. A strong launcer can break 120 feet. And, on that launch you can get a great flight as you hunt for lift.
If you have never seen a discus launched glider being thrown, click on these links.
This is a more relaxed throw using a 2 channel Mountain Models DL50 DLG. This plane can also be simply side arm launched. http://www.mountainmodels.com/dl50.wmv
This is a more competition oriented throwing technique. You will see a running start, a strong throw and impressive height achieved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44niDf7RHLw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBgEWCqrg8Y&feature=player_embedded#!
Many of the models I list below have videos of them being launched and flown. Most are kits, some are ARF, and one is an RTF. Typically the ones over $200 are ARF composite construction planes. More competition oriented planes typically range over $300.
RUDDER/ELEVATOR STYLE DLGs - Some have video links on their pages - One is a RTF plane Quick build and a simple 2 channel radio can put you in the sky with one of these.
Quick Flick 2 Built up balsa wings - Kit http://www.mountainmodels.com/product_info.php?cPath=25_28&products_id=205

Other DLG Examples

Hi-Start Launch?
Some people do put a tow hook on the bottom and use very light hi-starts to launch them as well. Then you can get them up 200-300 feet and hunt for lift from there. At 200+ feet you can get quite a flight even with no lift.
While a hi-start is not normally the way you would launch one of these, there is nothing to keep you from putting a hook in the plane and taking it up to very high launches off a light hi-start.
Fling hi-start - Intended for the Fling HLG http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHMZ3&P=7
Dynaflite up start - $25 This is not advertised for HLG/DLGs but I expect you could add more line and get a great launch with this. It says it will launch a 100" sailplane but don't you believe it. We have had a hard time getting one of these to take up a 2M plane. Should be safe considering the forces of a DLG launch. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXYXK6&P=7
Hand Launched/Discus Launched gliders are a very fast growing part of soaring, so consider these as part of your fleet and perhaps your entry into RC Soaring.
